![]() My wife likes country ham and enjoyed Sunrise's version. The biscuits were greasy and a bit messy, but filling, satisfying, and hit the spot. The biscuits were super fresh, soft, fluffy, buttery, slightly crumbly, and a little floury/powdery on the outside. In the end, it really comes down to what biscuits you typically like. Those two were clearly better to me than the country ham and Bad Grampa biscuits. My wife liked all four biscuits equally while the favorites were clear for me: I liked the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit the best followed by the biscuit and gravy. Overall, my wife and I thought these biscuits were delicious. The Bad Grampa Biscuit is a chicken biscuit with bacon, egg, and cheese. * Country ham, egg, and cheese biscuit - $3.79 * Sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit - $3.79 They churned orders out quick without a hiccup. During our visit, it ran like a well-oiled machine. They do serve sides like hash browns ($1.19) and grits ($1.59) as well as hot dogs ($2.39) and basic sandwiches and burgers (all $3.99 or less). Nothing surprising nor inventive, just traditional Southern comfort food. Biscuits start as low as $1.19 and can get expensive as $7.48 if you order their special "Bad Grampa" biscuit. The menu is simple and the prices are very affordable. They open early (6am, Monday-Saturday and 7am, Sunday) and close early (2:30pm, daily). Sunrise is open during breakfast and lunch hours only. We showed up close to 9am on a Saturday and there were only two cars ahead of us though a steady stream of customers quickly built up behind us. We've read about and seen pictures of the lines for this place, but I guess we got lucky. While the Louisburg location has seating for on-site dining, this location does not. This review is for the only other location which is situated in a small freestanding building in Chapel Hill, north of UNC's campus. ![]() The original restaurant opened in 1977-78 in Louisburg, northeast of Raleigh. ![]() I found Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen thanks to Yelp, but this restaurant has been around decades before Yelp even existed. It seams that biscuits are dead tradition in this town. At least you won't be disappointed if you've got low expectations. The only advice I have to offer, sadly enough, just go to Bojangles. A restaurant can't survive on a good reputation if they make every effort to go against it.Īt this point the only thing Sunrise has going for it is that "Rise", the other local biscuit place is an even bigger ripoff. I'm not sure I'd bet that they'll be here then. I know I don't have a say in how this Sunrise deals with rising costs, but turning you're food into a disappointment can't be a good approach.Įven after a long string of unsatisfying experiences, I'll give Sunrise another shot at some point in the next couple of years. Now, I'm embarrassed that I've recommended it to so many people, friends and strangers alike, and that breaks my heart. I've been a lifetime customer and someone who has preached the gospel of this good southern fried chicken on a biscuit as if Sunrise was a religion. It also makes me incredibly sad to feel the need to write THIS review. If you can't tell, I'm not saying this based on a single visit. ![]() This place has gone from legendary to a waist of money over a fairly short time. Actually, it's pretty small compared to any other biscuit you get from a drive-thru now. The portions are minuscule in comparison to what it was just a couple of years ago. The cost has always been ever so slightly more than a big fast food chain, but you got a lot more out of it. A giant piece of fried chicken hanging out every side of the biscuit! Delicious and gigantic! A real belly buster of a meal. Thats always what I would say when recommending this small local biscuit joint that you can't find anywhere else (that is, except for the single other NC location). The thing to get here has forever been some version of the chicken biscuit. It started with the hash browns and moved on to the proteins. I'm not sure if this is a result of Covid or other unavoidable outside factors, but over the last couple of years the portion sizes have been continually shrinking. Unfortunately the food has really gone down hill over the past few years. I've even driven from Greensboro just to get a chicken biscuit when I was looking for an excuse to drive. It's the type of place you tell others about when your out of state or have out of town guests. This place was a staple when I was growing up. ![]()
